Manchester United Looking to Kick Start Their Champions League Campaign

By Imran Kardar

Manchester United will be looking to put the loss to PSV behind them on their return to the Champions League and will be looking to get their first win when they come up against Wolfsburg at Old Trafford. It’s a big game for United having lost away to PSV on the night that Luke Shaw suffered that horrendous leg break. Another loss here and it could be panic stations. LVG and the players will be under pressure in this one for sure!

United should be fielding the same defensive line up they fielded on the weekend with DDG in goal and a back four of Valencia, Smalling, Blind and Darmian. Some reports today have said that Valencia, Carrick, Herrera and Rojo did not train today. If that is the case then expect Darmian to shift to the right and Young to be played at left back.

In the middle of the park we should see Schweinsteiger and possibly Schneiderlin. Though LVG could easily start with Carrick and Schweinsteiger giving United experience in a key game. But those two together lack a bit of pace and the Wolfsburg midfield could get around them easily.

The attacking trio should consist of Memphis, Rooney and Mata with Martial leading the line. Rooney and Mata will be key players in this game. Mata has been having a great season having already gotten the same number of goals as he did for Chelsea notably in 27 lesser games. They is racking up the goals and assists and needs to exert an influence in this game as well. Rooney will need to o the link up job between midfield and defense and recently we have seen glimpses of the old Rooney. With a key game v Arsenal coming up on the weekend United would want Rooney to start firing on all cylinders!

LVG could be tempted to rotate the squad around a bit keeping the game v Arsenal in mind on the weekend but I don’t expect him too. Having said that he could just field an absolutely different line up to the one mentioned above! That is LVG for you, unpredictable! My feeling is there is too much at risk in the Champions League for him to make big changes. United are not off the mark yet and losing two games could put their qualification in doubts. That’s why I say this is a big game for United.

I expect this to be a tough game for United with Wolfsburg not coming to Manchester just to be rolled over. Yes, Kevin de Bruyne might have moved to the blue half of Manchester but they have bought Draxler who is also an exciting player who can cause United problems. Wolfsburg will challenge the Red Devils and they will have to be up for it. I’m predicting a 1-0 win for United. GGMU!
