How many times have we heard that before?! After an absolute thrashing from Arsenal at the Emirates two weeks ago, Manchester United bounced back (in a manner they usually do) and beat an inform Everton side at Goodison Park! Got to say that United have turned things around quickly and not let that performance at Arsenal play too much on their minds and gotten things back on track. It was very important that they put in a good performance at Everton and scoring first set them on their way.
The first goal fell to maybe the most unlikeliest scorer in Morgan Schneiderlin. United started the game well and got the all-important first goal through Schneiderlin who took a ball from Smalling and passed it in the back of the net. The goal did the team’s confidence a whole lot of good as conceding first might have caused the players to go down in a slump.
The second goal came not too long after the first when Herrera headed an absolute peach of a cross from Rojo in to the goal. That little Spaniard again proves that when he plays he contributes. It was a good choice to put him straight in even though he was short on match fitness. The third goal came in the second half and all importantly it was Wayne Rooney who scored on the return to his boyhood club! It had been some 11 months since Rooney had scored an away goal. A run that doesn’t do a player of his quality any justice. It was a well taken goal and a cool finish when Rooney ran on to a through ball from Herrera and ran down at the keeper and slotted the ball past Howard. 3-0 and the game was over.
It was pleasing to see LVG make some bold and necessary changes to the squad for the game. Firstly, he acknowledged the threat that Lukaku would pose to the United defense and dropped Blind for Jones at centre back to partner Smalling. Darmian returned to right back and Rojo was brought straight in at left back. Rojo and Herrera were short on match fitness and in the past LVG has usually left such player on the bench however, today he decided to start with both in a key game. Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger were paired in the middle of the park and both put in solid performances. Memphis was dropped and Martial played in his place with Rooney up top, Herrera the No.10 and Mata wide right. This was a good shuffle of the front line and it paid off well for United. Some bold decisions and credit to LVG for taking them. For had he lost today the critics would have been out for his head.
Everyone put in a great shift and contributed to United winning. The middle of the park was solid with Morgan and Bastian controlling the game. Smalling looked after Lukaku all game and did a great job on the striker. Rojo and Darmian were solid at the full back positions. Martial tore poor Coleman apart all day. He picked up the ball and breezed past him with effortless ease on many occasions. Rooney and Herrera were lively and Mata distributed the ball around well.
All in all it was one of United’s best performances of the season. Every single player had a great game and contributed to the win. Things have been set up very well for next week it’s the big one, the Manchester Derby! GGMU!
